Healthcare, involving the patient, their family members, and the treating physician/surgeon,
is considered an intensely interpersonal phenomenon. If children are affected with
a problem, be it a malocclusion or malformation, it is not only them, but the whole
family that is affected. How the family perceives the problem will determine the outcome
of the illness/problem. The treating doctor must build a proper relationship and partnership
with the family, and understand the patient's living environment, values, and beliefs.
Knowing these, the doctor can identify the possibilities and challenges that might
appear during treatment and intervention. Recognizing that partnership is built on
respect, good and honest communication, and mutual trust is imperative. It should
focus on what is best for the child, and the professionals and parents must be honest
and sensitive toward each other.
